Dirk Bogarde eluded his 1950's matinee idol status to play darker roles in the 60's and 70's, working with some of Europe's greatest directors (Visconti: Death in Venice, The Damned; Cavani: The Nightporter; Pinter/Losey: The Servant; Fassbinder: Despair). I have written permission from him to use this photograph.

I sent a print of Matinee Idyll to Dirk Bogarde's agent, because it was part of an exhibition in London. Bogarde was as reclusive as Garbo so I knew he wouldn't come to the show, but I wanted him to know. He very graciously wrote this note. At that time I was just using the name Adam for my art.
